That's what my samurai has been having since my last post! And the good news is this......
barely a mark left! The reds came out and only the gold/ochre colour is left and even that is much less than before (it doesn't look too bad in the photo, but sadly in real life it's a bit more noticeable). Phew! The ice water certainly took a lot of the colour away.
I'm not sure how I will feel about washing my finished stitching from now on though.
I do have to say that Dimensions does state on their instruction sheet that,
"Because thread manufacturers have changed their dyes to make them safer for the environment, some colours may now bleed"
They also state that
"Cold water washes made for fine washables and wool garments may actually cause the thread to bleed"
I would have thought that a laundry detergent made specifically for delicates would have been more suitable for cross stitching ( I used a dishwashing liquid, which is what Dimensions recommends on their instructions sheet.) I thought this might be worth highlighting so that you don't have the same heart stopping moment like me.
Many cross stitching websites actually recommend that you wash your threads before stitching with them....reds in particular!
So anyway, all's well that ends well. I think I may give my samurai one last bath and see if the last of the gold/ochre colour will finally vanish - fingers crossed!
Thanks for all the lovely comments and suggestions about how to get the colours out. It was nice to know that others felt my pain! But I have to ask you this - how many of you will think twice before washing their next project? I know I will!!!

So glad it came out! That was devastating after the time you spent on it!
I bought a fabric from polstitches for a project and I'm reading the labels and it says may not be colourfast. I'm debating soaking it in cold salt water before stitching on it just in case and being very careful to NOT have to wash it after.

PHEWWWW ... I must admit the only time I wash stitched bits if the threads are anchor or DMC ... and on plain fabric then I use ariel hand wash and dunk it in the sink and swish and rinse and hang out to dry then iron ..... everything else nope ... don't wash hand dyes threads or fabric and I must admit to being very careful around them ....... love mouse xxxx

Thank goodness! I've heard a few horror stories of this happening and I try not to wash anything if I can help it.
"I posted about the stains on the aida cloth I had.. shout wipes took them right out!! Looks amazing this morning!"

Phew!!! So glad it came out!! I can barely see anything. Thanks for highlighting their instructions. I think if I am to ever wash anything, it would be the threads first and not after I stitch!

I've never washed anything of mine. I just try to be as clean and careful as possible when working ;)

I'm so glad that you were able to find a good solution to this problem. I have never washed a piece and don't ever plan to but I can relate to the red threads bleeding into the fabric which I completely hate.
This will be a beautiful piece when it is finished.
I've only ever washed one thing to get a mysetrious stain out. It did come out and the colours didn't bleed, but I'm very dubious about washing anything now.
It's great that it has worked. My worst case was when my friend put a cup of tea on my stitching ... you can still slightly see the crescent. I'll definitely worry about washing mine ... but since I mainly use dmc or anchor for threads/kits I think I am relatively safe ... I hope anyhow.
